Eso Won Books

An African-American led bookstore in Leimert Park, a neighborhood in Los Angeles considered the center of modern African-American music, culture, and art. In its 25 years of existence, the bookstore has experienced and survived a range of changes in industry, earthquakes, civil unrests, recessions, and even re-locations. James Fugate and Tom Hamilton, co-proprietors, managed to gather a plethora of titles about and written by African-American people, some of which would be most likely impossible to find elsewhere. We were given a small introduction from the owners about the store and its collection, the list of famous visitors that includes Toni Morrison, John Edgar Wideman, or Octavia Butler, and even given book recommendations, which we eagerly followed and so we left the store with hands full of books.
